HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss shortstop B A Vollmuth became the fourth Golden Eagle player to receive preseason All-American honors this season as Baseball America Magazine selected him today as their third team shortstop.
Vollmuth joins Todd McInnis (NCBWA), Collin Cargill (NCBWA) and Kameron Brunty (Ping Baseball) in the preseason All-American fraternity headed into the 2010 season.
Vollmuth entered the 2009 season as a back-up to Brian Dozier but a shoulder injury to Dozier in late April pressed the true-freshman from Biloxi into the starting role.
While starting 23 or the teams final 24 games it was the postseason in which Vollmuth made a name for himself among Southern Miss fans.
He slugged .778 with three home runs in the NCAA Atlanta Regional and was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player. In the championship game vs. Georgia Tech he tallied five RBI on two-home runs in one inning off Tech's Deck McGuire, who coincidentally was selected as a first-team All-American by Baseball America.
Vollmuth added homeruns against Florida in Super Regional and versus North Carolina in the College World Series, in all he hit six of his eight home runs in the postseason.
Over the summer he was selected to play in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer league where he was selected both a mid-season and post-season all-star. The mid-season classic was played at Fenway Park in July.
At the conclusion of the season Baseball America selected him as the 20th best prospect in the Cape.
He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 32nd round out of Biloxi High School.
Vollmuth and the Golden Eagles open the 2010 season on February 19 at "The Pete" vs. Northwestern State.
