HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Even Markus Wessinghage's determination to win his singles match wasn't enough to propel Southern Miss over a determined Stetson team as the Eagles fell 5-2 on Sunday.
Stetson got the first point of the day as they swept Southern Miss in doubles action. All three Golden Eagle teams kept it close and forced long matches, but in the end, Stetson prevailed.
Jan Burmeister and Julien Roussel, playing in the #1 spot, fell 8-6 while brothers Oscar Machuca and Diego Machuca, playing in the #2 spot, forced Stetson to win nine but were bested 9-7.
Patricio Alvarado dominated his singles opponent, Max Levanovich, to the tune of 6-0, 6-1 to hint at an Eagles' victory in that competition. However, both Machuca brothers and Strate Krstevski were unable to come away with wins which put the match out of reach.
The final game of the day, long after the match outcome had been decided, saw Wessinghage and opponent Alex Hacket duel it out in a back-and-forth singles match. Wessinghage took the first set 7-5 but was unable to close as Hacket took the second by the same score.
To find a winner, the two squared off in a seesaw super tiebreaker which saw Wessinghage ace his opponent to open. Wessinghage was finally able to break Hacket's serve and went up 9-7 before seeing his opponent double-fault on match point to give him the victory. The books will show a 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 victory in favor of the Black and Gold.
Southern Miss now heads to Troy on March 4 to take on the Trojans. Match time is yet to be determined.
