Southern Miss Falls To Tulsa, 60-52

TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa outscored Southern Miss 20-10 over the last 5:27 as the Golden Eagles couldn't hold onto a nine-point first half lead, falling 60-52 Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
It was the first time in seven games that the Golden Eagles allowed 60 points. It also snapped their four-game winning streak.
Junior Gary Flowers led all scorers with 19 points while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Juniors R.L. Horton and Sai'Quon Stone had eight points apiece.
Southern Miss (14-9, 4-5 C-USA) held 21-17 halftime lead. Angelo Johnson connected attempted an alley-oop to Torye Pelham, but the ball banked in instead, giving the Golden Eagles a seven point lead. Tulsa scored five straight points to pull within 24-22, but a lay-up by Stone and Flowers' third three-pointer pushed their lead back out to seven.
However, Tulsa went on a 10-3 run over the next 3:12 to tie the game at 32 with 13:30 to play. The teams traded baskets over the next eight minutes, with Southern Miss never holding more than a three-point lead. After Horton connected on two free throws to take a 42-40 lead, Justin Hurtt connected on a three-pointer to give the Golden Hurricane its first lead of the game, 43-42, with 5:13 to play. Tulsa would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Southern Miss shot 33.3-percent (18-of-54) from the field, while Tulsa connected on 50-percent (18-of-36) of its shots, including 65.0-percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles were outrebounded 33-26. Tulsa was 20-of-27 from the free throw line, while Southern Miss took just 14 from the charity stripe, hitting 11.
Jerome Jordan recorded his double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Ben Uzoh and Justin Hurtt had a team-high 16 points apiece. Uzoh also pulled down nine rebounds.
Southern Miss begins a four-game home stand this Saturday when they host Rice. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT.
