Southern Miss Visits Louisiana Tech in Final Nonconference Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss opens the 2011 year on the road with a visit to Louisiana Tech on Jan. 2, at 2 p.m. The game will be carried live on the Southern Miss Sports Radio Network on WXHB-FM 96.5.
Southern Miss is 5-7 after an 88-78 loss to Alabama. The Lady Eagles have lost their last four games. Rachel Vigers and Tanesha Washington scored 21 points apiece for the Lady Eagles while Jamierra Faulkner chipped in 10 points. Southern Miss shot over 50 percent for the game.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis is in her seventh season at Southern Miss and her 21st overall.
Vigers continues to lead the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game while Tanesha Washington leads the team in rebounding at 8.7 boards per game and is second on the team in scoring at 13.0 points. Faulkner has dished out 76 assists and collected 29 steals while averaging 10.9 points per outing.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 62.1 points and 40.2 rebounds per game. The Lady Eagles are shooting 40.3 percent from the field and 64.4 percent from the line.
Louisiana Tech comes into the game with a 7-5 record after an 83-75 loss to Marquette in the Fun and Sun Classic. Tarkeisha Mackey-Wysinger scored a team-high 19 points while Adrienne Johnson notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Coach Teresa Weatherspoon is in her third season with the Lady Techsters.
Johnson leads the team in scoring and rebound with averages of 20.5 and 8.8, respectively. Whitney Jones is averaging in double figures at 11.3 points per game.
As a team the Lady Techsters are averaging 67.7 points and 40.5 rebounds while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 63.9 percent from the line.
This is the fourth meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1989-90 season. Louisiana Tech leads the overall series, 3-1. The two teams faced each other in two NCAA Tournaments. The Lady Eagles got their first win against the Lady Techsters in 2007. Louisiana Tech won last year's meeting in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss opens Conference USA play on Jan. 6 against UAB at 7 p.m.
