Before the Tip
Southern Miss plays its fifth game at home this season with a matchup against UALR on Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be carried live on the Southern Miss Sports Radio Network on WXHB-FM 96.5.
The Lady Eagles are 3-3 after a 70-53 loss to No. 21 Georgia on Wednesday. Brittany Johnson led the Lady Eagles with a career-high 16 points and Tanesha Washington added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Eagles out rebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 40-38.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis is in her seventh season at Southern Miss and her 21st overall. Junior Rachel Vigers continues to lead the team in scoring with a 16.5 per game average. Washington leads the team in rebounding at 8.2 caroms per game and 3.0 steals per game. Jamierra Faulkner has dished out 39 assists and collected 16 steals.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 67.5 points and 42.3 rebounds per game. The Lady Eagles are shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 59.5 percent from the line. Of the 11 active players, all but one has scored at least two points.
Scouting UALR
UALR is enters the game with a 3-3 record after a 55-52 loss to Oklahoma State. The Trojans have posted wins over Davidson, Louisiana Tech and Montana State. The other two losses came at the hands of Texas A&M and Bowling Green.
UALR returns seven letterwinners including four starters from last year's team that finished 27-7 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Chastity Reed leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 21.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
As a team, the Trojans are averaging 54.3 points and 36.0 rebounds while shooting 39.4 percent from the field and 58.8 percent from the line.
The Series
This is eighth meeting between the two teams. UALR leads the series, 5-2, in a series dating back to the 2003-04 season. UALR won the initial meeting between the two teams and has won the last two meetings.
