HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Brian Ellis threw for three scores and ran for another as Alabama-Birmingham outlasted Southern Mississippi 50-49 in double overtime Saturday.
Golden Eagles running back Desmond Johnson scored from 2 yards out on the first possession of the second overtime, but UAB's Pat Shed answered with a 13-yard TD run. Ellis converted the two-point try with a pass to tight end Jeffery Anderson to seal the win for the Blazers (3-5, 2-2 Conference USA).
Ellis hooked up with receiver Mike Jones for the duo's third touchdown of the game on the opening drive of overtime. Southern Miss (5-3, 2-2) responded with a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass from Austin Davis to Quentin Pierce.
Fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns by Shed and Daniel Borne gave the Blazers a 35-21 lead, but Southern Miss tied the game on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Kelvin Bolden with 28 seconds left in regulation.
