HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The 2011 edition of the Southern Miss baseball team came together to play outside competition for the first time this season and defeated cross-town William Carey University 20-9 at Pete Taylor Park Saturday afternoon.
"I think we have a lot of things that we have to get better at before we start playing in the spring," head coach Scott Berry said. "I thought we did a great job of getting runners in and our approach at the plate was good at times. Carey played really well, they have a good club and it showed today but we have to get better."
The Golden Eagles recorded 21 hits on the afternoon with Kameron Brunty and Isaac Rodriguez pounding out three hits apiece. Brunty finished the day going three-for-six with four runs scored and two RBI while Rodriguez was three-four-four with three runs driven in and two runs scored.
Though none of the 11 true freshman played today, five players did see their first career action. Junior infielder Ashley Graeter was two-for-two with two runs scored and two RBI while redshirt freshman catcher Jared Bales was two-for-five with three RBI and a run scored.
On the mound junior transfer Chase Horn got the start, working two innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out one and walking two. Junior transfer Josh Thomason needed only 10 pitches to work a perfect frame while striking out one and junior transfer Matthew Shaw worked two innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out one.
Southern Miss scored at least one run in nine of the 12 innings and only one of the 12 innings was Carey able to force the Eagles down in order.
The Golden Eagles will finish off their final week off fall practice next week and conclude the fall season with the annual Black and Gold game next Sunday afternoon.
