HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Coming off the school's first trip to the College World Series the Southern Miss baseball team will officially open fall practice Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles, who have advanced to seven consecutive NCAA Regionals, won last years NCAA Atlanta Regional and NCAA Gainesville Super Regional before advancing to the College World Series.
The Black and Gold will take the field for the first time under the direction of head coach Scott Berry, who is anxious to see where his 2010 is at this point.
"We are excited to get going, we really have not had much of a break with the extended season of going to Omaha," Berry said. "I am anxious to see the balance between news guys with the returnees and get a feel of where our team is for 2010."
The Golden Eagles have been working four-on-one drills since September and will have the next 45 days to work in approximately 30 practices.
"I think four-on-ones have been going well and we are at a point now where we are ready to put everyone on the field together as a team and compete," Berry added.
The Golden Eagles return Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Todd McInnis along with a solid nucleus of starters who helped land the team in Omaha last season such as Joey Archer, Freshman All-American Kameron Brunty, Travis Graves, Tyler Koelling, NCAA Atlanta Regional Most Outstanding Player B A Vollmuth and Taylor Walker.
In addition to the 17 returning players, Berry welcomes in the nation's No. 21 ranked recruiting class along with new coach Michael Federico, who will over see the pitching staff this season.
The Golden Eagles will conclude fall camp with the annual Black and Gold Game on Sunday, November 1.
