Southern Miss Downs South Alabama, 3-1, In Volleyball Action

Southern Miss ran its record to 8-1 on the season while South Alabama dropped to 4-4.
Maia Ivanova posted a match-high 24 digs and Lisa Knecht added 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles controlled the first set jumping out to an early lead and never relinquishing it. Southern Miss finished with a .379 attack percentage while committing only four attack errors in taking the first set, 25-17.
The second set featured 20 ties and eight lead changes between the two teams as they battled back-and-forth. South Alabama fought off two set points to take set two, 28-26.
Southern Miss ran out to a 6-1 lead in the third set and cruised to a 25-10 win. The Golden Eagles put down 14 kills and out hit USA .353 to -.067.
The Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 before using an 8-4 run to take the lead for good. The Jags got within a point, 10-9, but Southern Miss ran off five straight points pushing the lead to 15-9. The Eagles closed out the set with a 9-2 run for a 25-13 win.
Southern Miss returns to action Saturday against Jackson State at 10 a.m., and concluding with Nicholls State at 4 p.m.
