BATON ROUGE, La. - The Southern Miss soccer team surrendered a goal at the end of the first half and two in the final eight minutes cost Southern Miss (1-2-0) as they fell to the No. 25 ranked Tigers 3-0 at the LSU Soccer Complex in Baton Rouge, La. Friday night.
"Give LSU a lot of credit, they came out with a lot of intensity and created momentum from the opening kick," head coach Scott Ebke said. "They were relentless in their attack tonight."
LSU (2-0-0) appeared to score the games first goal in the 28th minute as the Tigers played a corner kick into the box which rattled around for a minute before a shot was fired into the back of the net but it was called off due to a LSU foul before the shot to keep the game scoreless.
Southern Miss was able to sustain the pressure for the first 40 minutes before the Tigers capitalized.
The explosive LSU offense cracked the scoreboard with just over five minutes left in the first half as Melissa Clark connected from about eight yards out inside far post for a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers put the game away in the 82nd minute as Mallory Rutledge struck from 12 yards out for a 2-0 advantage.
LSU added their final goal in the 84th minute as the Tiger's Rachel Yepez found the back of the net on a corner kick.
The Tigers outshot Southern Miss 17-1 in the game.
"We have to do a better job of connecting passes to get into our attack, we could not connect tonight and therefore we did not have any real dangerous opportunities," Ebke added.
Southern Miss will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon as they host Southeastern Louisiana with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
