HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team fell in their season opener 3-0 at the Southern Miss soccer Complex Friday evening.
The Golden Eagles controlled the ball effectively in the early portion of the game outshooting the Jags 9-3 in the first half but South Alabama was able to find the net with their first two shots of the game.
"Give South all the credit, they were able to finish their chances and we did not," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We created several dangerous opportunities but just could not get it in the net, we need to be more dynamic in the attack."
The Jags struck first in the 20th minute as Landi Wilson connected for her first goal of the season and again in the 23rd minute as Natalie Parson scored on an assist from Sam Slover for a 2-0 lead which the Jags took into the half.
The Jags came out just under 20 minutes into the second half and added their third and final goal to put the game out of reach.
"We played fairly well together but when you give up two goals within three minutes early in the game its tough to overcome, I thought we played well up until that point. We have to get mentally stronger."
Southern Miss returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon as they host Nicholls State with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
