HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora announced today that Alonzo Lawrence has enrolled in school and will be a part of the Golden Eagle football team.
With a off-day slated on Wednesday, Lawrence will join the Golden Eagles for the first time on Thursday in an afternoon practice.
The 6-foot-1, 190-lb., defensive back from Lucedale, Miss., attended George County High School before attending the University of Alabama for a season. Lawrence redshirted last season for the Crimson Tide. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out this season and will be eligible in the fall of 2010.
The Parade and EA Sports First Team All-American rated four stars and was the No. 11 cornerback prospect by Scout.com. He was the No. 35 prospect of the Rivals.com Top 100 as well as tabbed as both the No. 2 rated player in the state of Mississippi in 2007 as well as the No. 2 cornerback.
He also garnered accolades as part of the Mobile Press-Register's Super 120 team (No. 8) and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Super Southern 100. He was named a 2006 Class 5A first-team all-state pick by the Mississippi Association of Coaches.
He played in the 2007 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic at Ladd Stadium in Mobile.
During his prep career, Lawrence recorded 143 tackles during junior and senior years as well as tallying 36 career TDs, including 22 TD catches and 14 kick returns (8 KOR and 6 PR). As a prep senior, he registered 93 tackles and two interceptions, while also adding 30 catches for 772 yards and 11 TDs.
Lawrence also poised as a threat on special teams as he scored six TDs on kick returns in 2007, including five on kickoffs and one punt return.
His brother, Eric Riley, was a wide receiver at Mississippi State.
