Softball Team Drops Two at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - In spite of heavy rains in the area over night, Southern Miss and Tulsa were able to get in the scheduled doubleheader Saturday as Tulsa defeated Southern Miss in the doubleheader, 9-3 and 7-1.
Southern Miss falls to 25-26-2 overall and 10-12-1 in league play, while Tulsa improved to 34-15 overall and 15-4.
In game one, Tulsa got on the scoreboard in the first, with two outs when Kailey Yarmer doubled to right and scored on a single to left by Vanessa Vice.
The Golden Eagles threaten after Ashley Razey singled up the middle and advanced to second on errand throw by the second baseman. Razey reached third on a ground out by Logan James.
After Tulsa led off the second with a hit by Timmons, the Golden Eagles got the lead runner at second for the first out. With a runner at first, Stephanie Chomicki sacrificed Jessica Stoelke to second and Samantha Davis got Skylar Swanson to ground out to the shortstop.
Southern Miss put two runs on the board in the third when Chanell Thurman led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Alonzo. Casey Jo Matthews struck out. Leslie LeJune got a hit off the pitcher's glove then stole second. Pilgrim drew a walk and Megan Hill hit a slow roller to the shortstop, plating Thurman. LeJune came home on an errand when the second baseman couldn't handle to the throw from short.
Tulsa came back in the third and added three runs. Davis retired the first two batters then Kailey Yarmer and Vanessa Vice had back-to-back hits and Brook Smart hit a three-run home run to put the Hurricane back on top 4-2.
The Hurricane tacked on two more in the fourth after getting the first two batters on, on consecutive singles on the right side. Tulsa got bases loaded after Swanson was hit by a pitch, and then Lauren Lindsay hit a ball to the right side which took a bad bounce and two runs scored on the play.
Megan Hill connected on her 11th home run of the season with a solo shot over right center. Razey followed with a doubled down the right field line, but the Eagles could get the run across.
Tulsa added three more runs in the bottom half of the frame when Smart belted her second three-run homer of the game.
Davis (12-10) pitched 5.2 innings in the loss, while Jackie Lawrence (16-4) picked up the win.
Tulsa put up four runs on four hits, including a three run blast by Yarmer, to take game two, 7-1.
Jordan Kinard scattered five hits and allowed one run, which was unearned, in picking up the win, while Courtney Ramos (12-12) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss scored its only run in the fourth when LeJune led off with a single to left. Pilgrim popped out to short and Megan Hill flew out to right field. Razey then hit hard fly ball to center, but was misplayed by Stoelke and LeJune was able to score from first. James added a single to center, but Razey was thrown out at the plate.
Tulsa added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close out the game.
The two teams will meet Sunday at noon to conclude the series and regular season.
