Softball Drops Final Regular Season Game, 2-0

TULSA, Okla. - Southern Miss softball team dropped its final regular season game, losing to Tulsa, 2-0, Sunday at the Hardesty Complex.
The Golden Eagles head into the Conference USA Championship presented by Helen of Troy with a 25-27-2 record overall and will be the sixth seed. With the sweep by Tulsa, the Hurricane wins the regular season championship and enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Samantha Davis (12-11) got the loss, allowing two runs on four hits, only one was earned. Jackie Lawrence (17-4) picked up the complete game shutout after giving up six hits, three in the first inning, but not allowing a run.
Leslie LeJune and Kristin Pilgrim recorded two hits apiece for the Eagles.
Southern Miss opened the inning with LeJune leading off with a single up the middle. Brandi Alonzo hit a fielder's choice bunt, forcing LeJune out at second. Pilgrim then singled through the left side, followed by Megan Hill's hit off the pitcher's glove to load the bases with only one out. Lawrence then struck out Logan James and got Ashley Razey to foul out to the catcher to get out of the inning.
Davis retired the Tulsa batters in order in the bottom half of the frame with a strikeout and two ground outs. Davis held the Hurricane hitless until Lauren Lindsey beat out a slow roller to second.
Tulsa opened the fourth inning with a leadoff triple to right when Kailey Yarmer a high fly ball to right field, but the wind caught the ball and carried it toward the foul line allowing it dropped in. Vanessa Vice followed with a double to right center to plate Yarmer.
Tulsa tacked on another run in the fifth when Stephanie Chomicki singled to left to start the inning. Brooke Swanson reached on a fielder's choice, but the throw to second was not in time to get the lead runner. Lindsey reached on a Golden Eagle error to load the bases. The Lauren Menke was out on an infield fly. Chomicki scored on a sacrifice fly by Yarmer.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the sixth with Pilgrim leading off with an infield single. Hill fouled out to the first baseman for the first out. Razey then singled through the left side. James grounded out to second, but pinch runners Stephanie Shiflet and Casey Jo Matthews were able to move up to third and second. Lawrence then struck out Lauren Castellvi.
Next for Southern Miss is the C-USA Tournament, May 7-9, in El Paso, Texas.
