Southern Miss Sweeps Doubleheader at Troy

Southern Miss kept their road record a perfect 8-0 away from Pete Taylor Park with a doubleheader sweep at Troy on Wednesday afternoon in Troy, Alabama.
Southern Miss (18-9) scored nine unanswered runs, all with two outs to come from behind and defeat Troy (15-12) in game one, 10-4
In game two, sophomore Seth Hester pitched the Golden Eagles over the Trojans in an 8-0 victory to win their fifth consecutive game, all on the road.
Hester fired a complete-game two-hit shutout without allowing a runner to reach second base in the seven inning contest.
"We swung the bats well again today," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I think the big thing today was the way that Hester pitched in game two and (Scott) Copeland pitched in game one, which was huge for our team. We have a big series this weekend, hopefully we can keep this momentum rolling in our favor."
James Ewing was five-for-nine in the doubleheader with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles at the plate. Southern Miss also belted three home runs on the day, one each by Bo Davis, Kyle Maxie and Corey Stevens.
GAME 1 RECAP
Southern Miss 10, Troy 4
Southern Miss scored nine unanswered runs, all with two outs to come from behind and defeat Troy in game one, 10-4
Josh Fields picked up the win on the mound working one inning, allowing one hit which was a solo home run. Scott Copeland picked up his first career save working three innings, allowing only one hit to the 10 batters he faced.
Bo Davis led the Golden Eagles at the plate with a two-for-three game including four RBI and a three run home run.
Troy began the scoring in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Miles Hoyle hit the first pitch from Weathers for a double down the left field line and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
Southern Miss answered right back to tie the game in the top of the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Joey Archer and Corey Stevens. Archer came around to score on Stevens RBI double which also extended his hitting streak to 13 games on the season.
Wade Weathers worked 1.1 innings allowing one run on two hits but walked four in his first career start. He left the game with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second inning. Jonathon Johnston entered the game in relief of Weathers with the bases loaded and threw one pitch to get the groundball double play and end the Trojan threat and keep the game tied at one.
Troy retook the lead in the bottom of the third on a Michael Precise solo home run off Johnston. The Trojans added an unearned run as Ryan Ditthardt reached on a field error by Taylor Walker and came around to score.
Troy added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Travis Tyre hit a solo home run off Josh Fields, who made his first appearance of the season on the bump.
Southern Miss put together a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs to take a lead they would not relinquish to Troy. Stevens drew a walk to start the rally before Travis Graves singled through the left-side and Walker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two-outs the Trojans thought they were out of the inning as Dozier appeared to fly out to left field but catcher's interference was called to force home Stevens and continue the inning.
Bo Davis then drew a bases loaded walk and James Ewing delivered the big blow a two-RBI single through the left side to put Southern Miss on top 5-4.
Southern Miss blew the game open in the with another two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning once again started by a Corey Stevens base on balls. Kameron Brunty followed with a single up the middle and Taylor Walker drew a walk to load the bases.
Brian Dozier delivered a two-RBI single and Bo Davis followed with a towering three run home run, his eighth of the season, to put Southern Miss on top 10-4.
GAME TWO RECAP
Southern Miss 8, Troy 0
Sophomore Seth Hester had the best outing of his young career while picking up his first win of the season, throwing a seven-inning complete game shutout. He worked seven shutout innings allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out two. He faced just three hitters over the minimum coaxing the Trojans into hitting two double plays. He allowed only five base runners on the afternoon, none of which reached as far as second base.
James Ewing had a three-for-four game with two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles at the plate.
Southern Miss struck for the games first run in the top of the second as James Ewing, Kameron Brunty and Joey Archer all singled to load the bases. Corey Stevens picked up the RBI on a ground ball fielders choice to score Ewing from third at put Southern Miss up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles added another run in the top of the third inning as Taylor Walker singled through the right side and Brian Dozier doubled down the left field line. Bo Davis platted Walker with a sacrifice fly to put Southern Miss up 2-0.
The double by Dozier moved him into second place all time on the Golden Eagle career his list at 297, passing Marc Maddox who Dozier tied with a single in game one.
Kyle Maxie delivered his first home run of the season to lead off the top of the fifth inning, a solo shot to left field to put Southern Miss on top 3-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Corey Stevens extended his hit streak to 14 games on the season in a big way, with a three-run home run over the 30 foot high wall in right field at Riddle-Pace Field. James Ewing and Brunty both singled earlier in the inning and scored on Stevens' fifth home run of the season.
Maxie ripped his second extra base hit of the game as he doubled to right-center and Michael Ewing platted Maxie on a RBI single off the wall. Taylor Walker followed with a double down the left field line to score Ewing from first and put Southern Miss up 8-0.
Southern Miss returns to Conference USA play this weekend as they host Marshall for a three game series at Pete Taylor Park.
