NEW ORLEANS, La. - Southern Miss used a 19-2 run over a six-minute span, erasing a three-point deficit in the process, on its way to a 72-55 win over host Tulane in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship Friday night.
A trio of Lady Eagles scored in double figures led by Stephanie Helgeson with a game-high 20 points, followed by Andrea Barber with 19 and Pauline Love added 15 points. Barber also dished out nine assists.
The Lady Eagles (19-11) started the game scoring the first four points of the game before Tulane came roaring back behind a 10-3 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Lady Eagles responded with a 15-2 run to push their lead to double digits, 24-12, with 10:04 remaining before the half.
Tulane (18-14) quickly cut the lead to six, 24-18, on six straight points. Southern Miss kept the lead between eight and six points for the next four minutes just before Tulane closed out the first half with a 6-2 run. The Golden Eagles led 34-30 at the half.
Both teams traded baskets over the first 3:39. With Southern Miss leading, 38-35, Tulane promptly scored six-straight points, taking a 41-38 lead. From there, Southern Miss held the Green Wave to two points over a 7:44 stretch while scoring 19 points in the process. The Green Wave cut the lead to 10, 58-48, but Lady Eagles continued to maintain their double-digit lead with timely baskets.
Brittany Lindsey led Tulane with 16 points and 11 rebounds followed by Indira Kaljo with 12.
The Golden Eagles held the rebounding edge, 37-33, with a least nine different players grabbing at least one rebound and kept the turnovers under 20.
Southern Miss will play the winner of No. 2 seed UTEP and No. 7 seed Marshall Saturday at 4:30 p.m., in a televised game on CBS College Sports Network.
