HATTIESBURG, Miss. Southern Miss Men's Tennis won their ninth straight doubles competition on their way to a victory over Nicholls State Wednesday at Hattiesburg Country Club.
Southern Miss continued their doubles winning streak, winning all three matches. Andrew Poole and Jan Burmeister defeated Radu Ionescu and Abhaya Prakish, 8-6. Patricio Alvarado and Markus Wessinghage tallied a win over Phenyo Matong and Eric Fisher, 8-3, while Domagoj Anic and Diego Machuca knocked off Sami Mouline and Rohan Shetty, 8-2.
"The key to our matches is that we have won nine straight doubles," said head coach Teddy Viator. "We have dominated on doubles, which has given us a momentum going into singles."
Southern Miss extended the lead, winning four of the six singles matches. Patricio Alvarado defeated Radu Ionescu at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4. Domagoj Anic also tallied a win over Abhaya Prakish, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 5, Diego Machuca defeated Sami Mouline, 6-1, 6-4, while Markus Wessinghage added to the win, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rohan Shetty. Andrew Poole lost to Eric Fisher, 6-4, 6-4. The last match of the day also ended in a tough loss for Jan Burmeister, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Phenyo Matog.
"Again we played good at one and Domgoj (Anic) played really good at three," said Viator. " We had a consistent performance at five and six, which we have kind of been lacking. Overall it was a good win against a dangerous team. We have a tougher test on Friday so we are looking forward to that challenge."
Southern Miss will return to action this Friday, as they host Louisiana-Lafayette at Hattiesburg Country Club. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
