HATTIESBURG, Miss - After an impressive first two weeks of the 2009 season that saw the Southern Miss baseball off to one of the better starts in school history the National College Baseball Writers have ranked the Golden Eagle baseball team the No. 27 team in the nation this week.
"It's always good when you can be nationally ranked," head coach Corky Palmer said. "We started the season very strong with some good wins but it is still very early and we have a lot of good teams left on our schedule."
The Southern Miss baseball team came out of the gates swinging the bats with 110 hits and 96 runs scored in the first eight games of the season. Southern Miss has outscored their opponents 96-22 this season and 56-4 through the first four innings this season further proving just how quick the offense has struck this season.
The Golden Eagles (7-1) have been almost as impressive on the mound as well allowing only 16 earned runs and 55 hits in 72 innings of work while striking out 58 hitters and walking only 18. Opponents are hitting .214 thus far this season.
This season the Eagles have also added a new element that has not been see as frequent around the program in the past few season: speed. The Golden Eagles have been perfect on the base paths swiping 17 bases in 17 attempts.
Southern Miss returns to action on Wednesday at they travel to Louisiana Monroe for a midweek matchup. They return to "The Pete" this weekend as they host No. 7 Cal State Fullerton for a three game series beginning on Friday.
