HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored at least one run in every inning to defeat Louisiana Tech 24-3 Saturday afternoon at a rain soaked Pete Taylor Park.
The 24 runs in today's game was the most runs scored since Southern Miss set the school record of 25 runs in 1999 vs. St Louis.
"We are very close to firing on all cylinders right now," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I would really like to get Bo (Davis) and James (Ewing) back to 100 % and get our lineup set heading into conference play next weekend."
Freshman Kameron Brunty led the offensive barrage with a five-for-five game including a triple and a double with three runs scored and four RBI on the afternoon.
Tyler Koelling was three-for-three on the afternoon with two RBI and two runs scored all after entering the game in the fifth inning. Brian Dozier, Corey Stevens and Adam Doleac added in two hits a piece as well.
Dozier extended his hitting streak to 15 games on the season while Taylor Walker ran his streak to 12 games on the year.
Kyle Lindsey was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst working five innings allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out seven to pick up his second win of the season.
Probably the best news of the afternoon was the return of Bo Davis to the lineup as the designated hitter today for Southern Miss. Davis had missed the previous seven games after undergoing minor knee surgery. He was one-for-two and walked three times with two runs scored with and RBI on the afternoon.
The Southern Miss offense has scored double-digit runs and hits in every game Davis has been in the lineup this season.
Southern Miss (11-4) struck early as Taylor Walker drew a leadoff walk and Kameron Brunty doubled him home. Brian Dozier executed his job with a productive out as he moved Brunty to third base allowing him to score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Bo Davis made his return to the lineup and drew a walk in his first game since March 1. He came around to score the third run of the inning on a Corey Stevens RBI single up the middle to cap the scoring in the first frame.
Brunty added another RBI in the second inning as he singled home Josh Fields who also singled earlier in the inning.
La. Tech (8-5) cracked the scoreboard with an unearned run in the top of the third as Clint Ewing hit what should have been a ground ball double play but Taylor Walker's throw was low at first base allowing Ewing to advance to second. Ewing came in to score on Patrick Thomas' double to centerfield to make the score 4-1.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the third as Davis, Kyle Maxie and Stevens all drew walks to end the day for Tech starter Jeb Stefan after working only 2.1 innings. Adam Doleac ripped a two RBI single off new Bulldog pitcher Mike Jefferson to make the score 6-1.
Brian Dozier extend his hitting streak to 15 games with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning over the left field wall, scoring Walker and Brunty to give Southern Miss a 9-1 advantage.
Brunty added another RBI on a single to left field to score Fields who was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Davis forced home Michael Ewing, who walked earlier in the inning, on a fielders choice to make the score 11-1.
Adam Doleac started the Southern Miss rally in the bottom of the fifth with a double to right-center field and came around to score on a Tyler Koelling pinch hit single. Taylor Walker followed with a double down the left field line to score Koelling. Brunty followed with his fifth hit of the day, a triple to center field to score Walker and pick up his fourth RBI of the afternoon.
Brian Dozier continued the rally with an RBI single to score to score Brunty and cap the four run frame.
Joey Archer blasted his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to put Southern Miss up 16-2.
Corey Stevens added a bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to score Nick Smith who drew a walk to start the inning and Joey Archer drew a bases loaded walk to score the 18th run of the game for Southern Miss. BA Vollmuth drew a bases loaded walk to force home Maxie and Tyler Koelling added a RBI single through the right side to score the 20th run of the evening.
Taylor Walker was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded and BA Vollmuth scored on a wild pitch. A Nick Smith ground ball was misplayed by Tech second baseman Kevin Winn to allow Koelling and Walker to cap the eight run eighth inning.
Mark Threlkeld added a RBI single in the top of the ninth off Moses Munoz to give Tech their third run of the game.
The two teams will finish off the three game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.
