HATTIESBURG, Miss. Southern Miss Men's tennis entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings at No. 74 in this week's poll released on Tuesday. This marks the first national ranking since 2001 for the Eagles.
"We have not been nationally ranked since 2001, this is a great accomplishment for our team," said assistant coach Marc Lux.
Southern Miss broke into the rankings after winning 7 of their past 8 matches, including wins against nationally ranked UNO and UNLV. The team finished their scheduled home matches on Tuesday with a victory over Southeastern Louisiana, adding to the Eagles' undefeated home record. In addition to an undefeated home record, Southern Miss is also undefeated in doubles, having won 11 consecutive doubles matches.
"It feels great to be ranked, especially since it is my senior year. It means a lot to the team, we have been working very hard to accomplish this goal," said senior Domagoj Anic. "I am hoping that we will continue to play well for the rest of the season and improve our ranking."
Freshman Patricio Alvarado is also nationally ranked, appearing at No. 123, in the men's singles rankings released on March 3. Alvarado, a native of Manta, Ecuador, was also nationally ranked in January.
Southern Miss has four regular season matches left to play, including matches against Lamar, Rice, BYU and Nebraska.
The Golden Eagles are currently 8-3 in season play and will return to action Saturday, March 14, when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to compete against Lamar. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT.
