IRVING, Texas - The 2009 Conference USA Women's Basketball All-Academic Team includes three seniors, one junior and one sophomore as announced by the league office today. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on the basketball team.
Southern Miss' Kendra Reed receives her third consecutive All-Academic Team honor as a biological science major. The senior guard maintains a 3.44 GPA while leading the Golden Eagles from the free throw line with a .905 percentage.
Joining Reed in the trio of seniors are Ashley Langford and Megan Valicevic of Tulane. Langford owns a 3.26 GPA as a double-major in business management and marketing. The Harrisburg, Pa., native reached the 1,000-point mark earlier this season while also becoming Tulane's all-time assist leader.
Valicevic currently ranks second on the Green Wave squad in scoring and third in steals and field goal percentage. The Woodlands, Texas, native holds a 3.60 GPA in Digital Graphic Design.
Tara Watts of Rice collects her second consecutive All-Academic Team award. The junior guard owns a 3.42 GPA as a double-major in psychology and pre-medicine while leading the Owls in three-pointers made.
Rounding out the All-Academic roster is Amanda Peterson of UAB. The sophomore guard is an exercise science major with a 3.76 GPA. The Homewood, Ala., native leads C-USA and ranks among the nation's best in three-pointers made (2.52 pg) while also contributing in assists, steals and blocks for the Blazers.
The 2009 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship will begin on Thursday, March 5 inside Fogelman Arena on the campus of Tulane University. The quarterfinal games are on Friday with the semi-final games schedule for Saturday and championship play on Sunday.
