HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss used 18 hits and scored 12 runs to defeat South Alabama 12-0 Wednesday evening in front of 3,387 fans at Pete Taylor Park.
Though the Golden Eagle offense scored double digit runs for the fifth consecutive game the story of the night was junior transfer Kyle Lindsey, who threw a complete-game four-hitter while striking out 10 Jaguars in his first start of the season.
"Lindsey was tremendous tonight," head coach Corky Palmer said. "We have really played well these first five games and the key is we have received good starting pitching every night which has allowed our offense to relax. I could not ask for anything better than the game he pitched tonight in his first Division I outing."
Lindsey faced three batters over the minimum using 95 pitches while allowing only five base runners all game, none of which reached as far as second base after the first inning. Included in his masterful performance was a stretch from the fourth through the seventh in which he retired 10 consecutive hitters.
Brian Dozier continued to pace the offensive attach with a four-for-five night including a RBI, two doubles and two runs scored. He is now 14 for 21 on the season for a .667 average.
Bo Davis had a three-for-five game including a two-run home run and Kameron Brunty was two-for-five including his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the eighth inning. Joey Archer added in three hits and three RBI and Taylor Walker had two hits, including a double and two runs scored.
Through the first five innings it looked like the explosive Southern Miss offense would be held in check against a solid pitching performance USA's Miles Ethridge.
Southern Miss eventually cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Taylor Walker doubled to right field and came around to score on a Bo Davis RBI single.
The Golden Eagles showed they could play small ball as well for the first time this season in the bottom of the sixth inning. Corey Stevens led off with a double, Kyle Maxie laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Stevens and Josh Fields added a sacrifice fly to center to give Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
Bo Davis extended the Southern Miss lead in the bottom of the seventh with his second home run in as many nights, a two-run shot to right center field for a 4-0 Golden Eagle advantage. The rally continued as Kameron Brunty single and Dozier delivered his second double of the game. Kyle Maxie followed with a walk to load the bases with two outs.
Josh Fields delivered a high-chopper infield single to score Brunty. Archer followed with a two-RBI single to right field to make the score 7-0. Michael Ewing continued the two-out rally with a RBI single to right field scoring Fields and capping the six run inning.
The Southern Miss portion of the eighth was much of the same as the Golden Eagles struck again, this time four runs crossed the plate. Kameron Bruty delivered his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to right-center field. Kyle Maxie and Joey Archer both added in RBI singles to finish off the scoring at 12-0.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend as they host Louisiana Lafayette for a three game series at "The Pete."
