HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball program and head coach Scott Berry announced today the addition of two prep athletes for the 2011 season.
"We are very excited about both of these young men," head coach Scott Berry said. "We really feel like they can both contribute in our program right away."
The Golden Eagles added to their youth with outfielder Joe Martin and a left-handed pitcher Josh Rogers.
Martin joins the Southern Miss program from Zachary High (Louisiana) where he has been a three-year starter on a team that has won three-consecutive Louisiana State 4A championships.
As a junior, Martin helped the Broncos the Class 4A championship by hitting .395 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Martin also had 16 stolen bases.
"Joe is the ultimate competitor and plays a very hard nosed, blue-collar style of baseball, which is exactly what we want at Southern Miss," recruiting coordinator Chad Caillet said. "He is very versatile defensively, with good speed who can hit in the middle of the lineup for us."
He was an all-state selection the previous two seasons while also garnering preseason All-American honors.
Rogers is a left-handed pitcher from Hillcrest Christian in Jackson, Miss. where he has been pitching since the eighth grade. He was an all-state selection the past two seasons (as a sophomore and junior) and an all-district selection the previous four years (eighth grade through junior year).
"Josh looks as if he will be a very good, young left-handed pitcher," Southern Miss pitching coach Michael Federico said. "He has a lot of ability and command of three pitches including a fastball in the mid 80's with a great change up."
