Softball Post a Pair of Wins

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team finally got a chance to play games Sunday, posting two wins with a 3-1 win over William Carey and a 6-3 win over Co-Lin Community College after a couple of rain delays.
Sophomore Courtney Ramos allowed only three hits and one run to post the win while Carey's Anna Ard scattered four hits and struck out seven batters over seven innings in the loss and allowed only one earned run. Ramos also struck out six batters.
Four players recorded a hit apiece led by Chanell Thurman solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Eagles up 1-0.
The score stayed that way until the seventh when Missy Paulina reached base with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Alyssa Boutwell. Bree Neidhardt then singled third and short, plating pinch runner Morgan Stewart to tie the game.
In the bottom half of the frame, Christina Roosmalen singled to right and reached second on a pass ball. Thurman followed with a walk before Britney Dinelt dropped down a bunt that stayed just inside the foul line and she reached first with a hit, but an errand throw allowed Roosmalen to score and Thurman to get to third. Leslie LeJune hit a deep fly ball to center that allowed Thurman to score, giving Southern Miss a 3-1 advantage.
In game two, Southern Miss scored three runs in bottom of the fourth to go up 3-2 against Co-Lin on their way to a 6-3 win.
Freshman Gabby Luciani got the win, giving up three hits and striking out nine batters. None of the runs were earned. Bethany Pinkston got the loss, working five innings and allowing five runs on five hits.
The Eagles pounded out eight hits with LeJune and Dinelt tallying two hits each, while Jill Mathis, Logan James, Roosmalen and Stephanie Shiflet recording a hit apiece.
Co-Lin got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third when Kayla Coleman reached on a single down the right field line, followed by Holli Smith's walk. With runners at second and first, Luciani had a wild pitch that allowed Coleman to score from second and Smith advanced to third. Monea Cameron then singled up the middle, plating Smith.
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, James doubled down the left field line followed by Danielle La Pointe earned a walk. James scored off a Roosmalen's single to left and pinch runner Kirsten Perry advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Casey Jo Matthews scored on a sacrifice fly by Thurman.
Southern Miss added two more runs in the fifth after LeJune led off with a double to left, followed by single by Dinelt. Both scored on a Mathis' single.
Co-Lin got a run back in the top of the six after Cameron reached base with a walk then stole second. She was sacrificed to third and scored on an error.
Southern Miss added its final run in the bottom of the seventh when Matthews reached base with a walk and stole second and scored off an error.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, playing the games that were rained out on Saturday. Game times are 3, 5 and 7 p.m.
