Softball Posts Two Wins

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team posted two wins Tuesday, 6-1 over William Carey and 12-0 over Pearl River Community College.
Freshman Gabby Luciani picked up the win, allowing two hits and one run in seven innings pitched. She struck out four batters. Carey's Melanie Bush got the loss, giving up six hits and six runs, only four were earned.
Britney Dinelt led Southern Miss with a two hits with Megan Hill, Jill Mathis, Danielle La Pointe and Christina Roosmalen adding a single apiece.
Southern Miss put three runs on the board in the first inning when Dinelt singled and stole second. Hill then singled and advanced to second on the throw as Dinelt scored. Mathis reached first on a fielder's choice. Both players moved up a base on a double steal. Logan James grounded out to short, but earned an RBI when Hill scored. Pa Pointe singled to center to score Mathis.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the third when Dinelt led off with a double and Hill walked. Mathis then put down a bunt single to load the bases. James hit a deep fly ball to left to score Dinelt. La Pointe reached base on an error to load the bases. Hill scored off a sacrifice fly by Roosmalen.
Carey scored its only run on a Judy Barber solo shot well over the left field fence.
Southern Miss scored its final run in the sixth after Roosmalen singled, then, pinch runner Casey Jo Matthews stole second and advanced to third on an errand throw. Chanell Thurman flew out to right to score Matthews.
In game two, Courtney Ramos and Lana Vaughn combined to pitch shutout against Pearl River. Ramos got the win, working six innings and allowing two hits while striking out 11 batters. Vaughn came on to pitch the final inning.
Leslie LeJune and Thurman combined for seven runs batted in when both went 3-for-4 at the plate, accounting for six of the Eagles' 11 hits. Hill finished with two hits with Mathis, Alexis Hurley and La Pointe adding a hit apiece.
Southern Miss scored five runs in the bottom of the first when LeJune lead off with a single. Stephanie Shiflet put down a bunt and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error that allowed LeJune to score. Mathis doubled down the left field line, plating Shiflet. Hurley reached on a fielder's choice and Thurman followed with a three-run home run.
The Eagles added a run in the second after Shiflet advanced all the way to second on a PRCC error. Hill singled up the middle to score Shiflet from second.
Southern Miss put two more runs on the board in the fifth. Shiflet walked followed by a Hill single. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Mathis. Shiflet scored on a ground out to second as pinch runner Kirsten Perry moved to third. Perry scored when Roosmalen reached base on an error.
The Golden Eagles scored four more runs in the final frame as Dinelt reached base on an error. Hurley then doubled to right center. Both scored off when Thurman doubled to left. La Pointe singled to left before LeJune doubled down the left field line, scoring Thurman and La Pointe.
