Lady Eagles Host East Carolina In C-USA Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team plays the second of a four-game homestand when the Lady Eagles host East Carolina Saturday that has been designated as WBCA PinkZoneTM Game. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at 4 p.m.
The Lady Eagle game can be heard on WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Josh West providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
The Lady Eagles will be donning all pink uniforms with black numbers. Admission for these games will be $2, for those wearing pink to "Pink out the Greenhouse". T-shirts will also be sold at the game for $10 each. All monies raised will go to `Waiting for a Cure' Foundation, with 100 percent of the profits staying in Hattiesburg to go towards breast cancer survivors with exams and other costs.
The Lady Eagles' special jerseys will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the game, Saturday, in a live auction with Southern Miss graduate and screen actor, Gary Grubbs, as the auctioneer. The minimum bid on each jersey is $100 and all proceeds will go to `Waiting for a Cure.' Anyone is welcomed to bid on any of the jerseys.
Southern Miss is 13-7 overall and 6-1 league play following a 70-64 win over Marshall in which Tanesha Washington led the way with a career-high 21 points. Kendra Reed and Pauline Love added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Andrea Barber dished out 11 assists.
Love continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, while Helgeson is averaging 10.6 points.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 69.3 points and 40.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 66.8 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles have connected on 82-of-259 from behind the arc.
East Carolina comes into the game with a 12-8 record overall and 3-4 in league play, after an 83-72 loss at UCF. Jasmine Young led four Lady Pirates in double figure scoring with 16 points, followed by Allison Spivey with 11, LaCoya Terry and Crystal Wilson had 10 points each.
Head Sharon Baldwin-Tener is in her seventh season at the helm and returns eight letterwinners, including four starters from last year's team. Terry leads East Carolina in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game, while Kim Gay leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game. Young adds 11.6 points and 5.7 assists per game. The Lady Pirates are averaging 70.8 points and 41.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 65.2 percent from the charity stripe.
This 11th meeting between the two teams and Southern Miss trails the series 6-4, including losing both meetings last season.
Following the East Carolina game, the Lady Eagles host SMU in a nationally televised game on CBS C, Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. The game has been designated as "Pack the House". All tickets are $1 for admission.
