Women's Basketball Hosts Marshall In C-USA Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team begins a four-game homestand when the Lady Eagles host Marshall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Lady Eagle game can be heard on WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Josh West providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss is 12-7 overall and 5-1 league play following a 65-50 win over Rice in Pauline Love posted a double-double16 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Stephanie Helgeson and Andrea Barber with 15 points apiece. Barber also had nine assists and eight rebounds.
Love continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, while Helgeson is averaging 10.7 points.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 69.3 points and 41.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles have connected on 77-of-243 from behind the arc.
Marshall comes into the game having five of its last six games, including the last three. Marshall owns a 12-7 record overall and 5-1 in league play, after a 72-57 over Memphis. Tynikki Crook scored 19 points in helping the Herd overcome a 15-point first-half deficit. Chantelle Handy and Alyssa Hammond tallied 16 points apiece.
Head Coach Royce is in his eight season at the helm and returns six letterwinners, including four starters from last year's team. Tynikki Crook leads Marshall in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Chantelle Handy and Alyssa Hammond add11.3 and 10.2 points per game. The Herd is averaging 67.4 points and 37.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 66.2 percent from the charity stripe.
This eighth meeting between the two teams and Southern Miss leads the series 5-2.
Following the Marshall game, the Lady Eagles host East Carolina in the WBCA PinkZoneTM Game at 4 p.m. The Lady Eagles will be donning all pink uniforms with black numbers.
Admission for these games will be $2, for those wearing pink to "Pink out the Greenhouse". T-shirts will also be sold at the game for $10 each. All monies raised will go to `Waiting for a Cure' Foundation, with 100 percent of the profits staying in Hattiesburg to go towards breast cancer survivors with exams and other costs.
The Lady Eagles' special jerseys will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the game, Saturday, in a live auction with Southern Miss graduate and screen actor, Gary Grubbs, as the auctioneer. The minimum bid on each jersey is $100 and all proceeds will go to `Waiting for a Cure.' Anyone is welcomed to bid on any of the jerseys.
