Cross Country Team Finish Third at Golden Eagle Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's cross country team finally got the opportunity to compete in its first cross country meet this season and finished third.
Their opening competition, Tulane Invitational, was cancel because of Hurricane Gustav.
Southern Miss placed two runners in the top 10, led by sophomore Zuna Portillo-Rodriguez, who finished third overall covering the 5K course with a time of 20:39.61. Faith Ngobiro was 10th with a time of 2:25.91.
Other Golden Eagle finishes included LaSheika Dinkins 16th with a time of 24:07.35, Terria Wheeler was 19th with a time of 25:53.14 and Cheris Fletcher finished 21st with a time of 27:03.34.
Ole Miss took the team title, placing six runners in the top 10 with a score of 26. Lady Rebel Logan Waites won the individual title, covering the course in 20:28.50 despite temperatures in the high 80s and almost 80 percent humidity under sunny skies. Jackson State finished second in the team standing with 55 points, Southern Miss third with 69 points, University of Mobile 95 points and Millsaps 98 points.
Ole Miss also came away with the men's title with a total of 20 points, placing all six runners in the top 10. Kyle Lewis led the way for the Rebels in the 8K with a time of 27:02.38.
Jackson State finished second with 52 points and Mobile was third with 58 points.
Southern Miss returns to action in the Memphis Twilight Invitational, Sept. 13.
