HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi Soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to four games after a 1-1 tie vs. Troy Wednesday Night.
The Golden Eagles (3-0-1) were forced to play the Trojans (1-0-2) at Hattiesburg High School's football stadium because the Southern Miss field was still unplayable after Hurricane Gustva's impact on the Pine Belt region.
"Troy really battled us today, you have to give them credit for playing with the amount of effort and energy that they did," head coach Scott Ebke said.
Southern Miss came out firing and took control of the game early as Sarah McFadden hit a perfect cross pass to Mallory Barnes who fired directly in front of the goal from about six yards out to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the 12th minute.
The two teams battled through most of the first period before the Golden Eagles made a mistake deep in their own territory which Troy capitalized on in the 41st minute.
Katie Cooper pulled Southern Miss keeper Holly Cox to the near side of the net and passed to Jill Pinder who missed firing a good shot but was able to tap the ball just hard enough that it rolled inside the far post to tie the game at one.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next 70 minutes forcing the tie game after two overtime periods.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Sunday at they travel to Oxford, Miss. to battle the Ole Miss Rebels.
"We have to refocus very quickly and get ready for a well coached and well organized Ole Miss team that can really move the ball," Ebke added.
