HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball program and head coach Corky Palmer announced today that they will play two scrimmage games this fall in addition to the annual `Black and Gold' game at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles will host cross-town William Carey College on October 12 and Nichols State will visit "The Pete" on October 19. First pitch for both games will be at 2:00 p.m.
Both games will be a 12 inning scrimmage.
"This is a great opportunity for us to see our team compete and evaluate everyone further in game situations, which will help us greatly with all the new faces we have this season," Palmer said. "With the new NCAA scheduling rules, I like the idea of playing a few games in the fall and hopefully we can continue to do this in the future."
The two scrimmage games mark the first time the Golden Eagles have played other institutions in the fall practice period. Last season was the first year the NCAA condensed the 56 game schedule, since Southern Miss will only play 54 games in the 2009 regular season they are allowed two games in the fall to reach the 56 game maximum.
The two games will be considered exhibitions and not count towards overall rankings or stats in the 2009 season.
Tickets will be available for both games at the Southern Miss ticket office in advance or at the Pete Taylor Park ticket window day of the game. The price will be $5 per ticket.
Southern Miss will also keep tradition and hold the annual `Black and Gold' game on Sunday, October 26. First pitch is set for 1:30. The `Black and Gold' game will mark the end of the fall practice period for the Golden Eagles.
