Cleland in Second Place to Lead Golden Eagles at Adam's Cup of Newport

Newport, R.I. - Senior Rocky Cleland shot a five-under 139 to lead Southern Miss to a third place showing after two rounds of the Adams Cup of Newport. The tournament is hosted by the University of Rhode Island and is being played at Newport National Golf Club.
Cleland opened with a career-low round of 69, and followed with a 70 to finish five-under and in second-place heading into the final round.
Redshirt junior Paul Apyan is in a tie for 14th-place after firing a two-over 146 (76-70). Junior Wes Carter is tied for 32nd-place after shooting round of 77-74 for a total of 151. Junior Alex Park shot a 76-77 for a 153 and a tie for 41st, while redshirt freshman Freddie Janneck tied for 54th-place after shooting rounds of 79-77 (156).
Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon is nine-under to lead after two rounds, followed by Cleland. Akron's David Addison and Andrea Pavan of Texas A&M are tied for third-place after firing three-under 141's.
Texas A&M leads the team scoring with a ten-under 566 (286-280). Minnesota is in second-place with a five-under 571 (284-287). In third place sits Southern Miss (298-291) with 589 strokes. Host Rhode Island is in fourth, shooting 594 (294-300). Furman (297-298) and Francis Marion (303-292) are tied for fifth with 595 strokes. Hartford (294-303) and George Washington (295-302) are two-shots back with 597 strokes.
Saint Joseph's is in ninth with 601 (300-301) strokes. New Mexico State (300-302) and Akron (298-304) are tied for 10th-place with 602 strokes, followed by Temple (306-305 - 611), Marshall (309-305 - 614), Connecticut (312-310 - 622), Navy (316-313 - 629) and Brown (315-319 - 634).
Southern Miss closes out the tournament tomorrow. Play begins at 8:00 a.m.
