Softball Falls to No. 23 Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - No. 23 Mississippi State scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie in defeating Southern Miss, 5-2, in non-conference action Wednesday at the MSU Softball Field.
Southern Miss dropped to 23-25 on the season, while State improved to 38-16. Samantha Davis got the loss for the Lady Eagles, pitching 5.2 inning. Misty Flesher, who worked only 1.2 innings, got the win for the Bulldogs in relief of Kelsey Nurnberg.
State loaded the bases in the third and fourth innings, but Davis was able to work her way out of both jams.
Southern Miss put the first run on the board in the top of fifth when Allison Bullard hit a two-out single down the left field line, then stole second. Megan Hill then singled to center, scoring Bullard.
State responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame when Ali Bainbridge tripled down the right field line with one out. Courtney Bures then reached on a field error by right fielder that allowed the runner to advance to third base. Hayley Guess then doubled to center to score Bures.
The Lady Eagles pushed a run across in the top of the six to tie the game at 2-2 when Kristin Pilgrim led off with a single up the middle. Holly Milner came on to pinch run for Pilgrim. With one out, Jennifer Fox singled to left. Karissa Jones came on to pinch run for Fox. Lauren Castellvi flew out to center. Brandi Alzono then singled just past the second base, scoring Milner from second.
Heading into the bottom of the inning, Jessie Bailey opened with a single to center followed by a double to left by Brittany Bell to plate Bailey. Megan Bateman moved Bell to third on a sac bunt. Boyce reached on a fielder's choice and advance to second, getting Bell out at home. Chelsea Bramlett followed with a bunt single. Bainbridge then sent a double to left, scoring Boyce and Bramlett. Meghan Harbuck came on to relieve Davis and getting the final out.
In the top of the seventh, Flesher retired the first two batters before Chaney reached on a single up the middle, but Pilgrim lined out to second to end the game.
Southern Miss finished the night with nine hits with Hill, Fox and Alonzo getting two apiece. Bainbridge paced the Bulldogs with a double and triple and two RBI.
Southern Miss plays its final road series, April 26-27, when the Lady Eagles travel to El Paso to take UTEP. First pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 4 p.m. central followed by game two at 6 p.m. The final game of the series is set for 1 p.m., Sunday.
