Softball Drops Game One of Double-Header, 8-7

EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP Miners pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth in defeating Southern Miss, 8-7, in the first game of the double-header.
Samantha Davis dropped her third consecutive decision falls to 13-10, while Nichole Tunget got the win for the Miners, working 2.2 innings.
Southern Miss put runners at first and second with no outs, but could not get a run across as Townsend got Pilgrim to hit into a fielder's choice that forced Hill out at third, then struck out the next two Southern Miss batters.
UTEP put up three runs on the board on back-to-back home runs. Camilla Carrera sent a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence and Townsend followed with a solo shot to right center.
The Lady Eagles got their first run in the top of the second when Alonzo reached base with a walk then advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Brittney Jones. Bullard moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Southern Miss had the bases loaded when Hill got her second walk of the game. Chaney then singled to left, plating Alonzo. Pilgrim then grounded out to third.
Southern Miss pushed two runs across the plate in the third inning to tie the game at 3-all. Logan James reached base with a walk. Fox singled down the left field line. Both runners advanced on a sac bunt by Castellvi. With two out, Jones singled to left to plate James and Pigott, who came on to pinch run for Fox.
The Miners came right back in the bottom of the frame scoring two unearned runs. Carrera led off with a double. With one out, Holland reached base on an error by the centerfielder, then Perez singled to right to score Holland.
USM added a run in the top of the fourth on a solo shot by Hill half way of the hill in centerfield.
In the sixth, Milner reached on a bunt single to third and advanced to second when Hill walked. Chaney got her third hit of the game to lead the bases. Pilgrim then singled through the right side, plating Milner and Hill. Chaney scored on a sacrifice by James for the third run of the inning.
Southern Miss finished the game with eight hits, but left six runners on base.
