Men's Tennis Defeats Southern, 6-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team defeated Southern, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles opened play by taking all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Will Thames and Will Covington defeated Kashwayne Nelson and Elvis Espinal, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. Markus Wessinghage and Diego Machuca then clinched the doubles point by winning their No. 2 doubles match over Bino Rasedisa and Onkabetse Matong, 8-2. Jan Burmeister and Andrew Poole finished the doubles sweep, taking the No. 1 double match from Marlon Gichie and Tyler Chin, 8-4.
Southern Miss kept up its play in singles action, as they won the first four singles matches. Strate Krstevski made quick work of Southern's Espinal, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. At No. 3 singles, Wessinghage defeated Matong in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Burmeister clinched the match for the Eagles, winning his No. 2 singles match over Rasedisa, 6-3, 6-1. Felipe Sylva then defeated Nelson, 4-6, 7-6 (10-5) at No. 6 singles.
Southern earned its only point of the match when Chin defeated Callen Fraychineaud, 5-7, 6-4 (10-5) at No. 5 singles. Machuca earned the Golden Eagles final point, defeating Gichie at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Southern Miss returns to action tomorrow when the Golden Eagles face Southeastern Louisiana at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
