Men's Tennis Team Falls to Nebraska, 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team lost to Nebraska, 5-2, in tennis action Friday at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
"I thought we competed well," head coach Teddy Viator said. "We had a chance to win the doubles' point, but lost in a tie-breaker. I believe winning the doubles would have given us some momentum going into the singles. We were playing without our best player today, but you have to give Nebraska credit because they were better than us."
Southern Miss opened doubles' play, winning the at No. 1 doubles with Diego Machuca and Markus Wessinghage downing Tobias Schneider and David Bendheim (NEB), 8-6. The Huskers fought back to take wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Francois Van Impe and Hendrik Stahmer (NEB) defeated Oscar Machuca and Strate Krstevski, 9-7, then clinched the point when Calin Parr and Karl Jones (NEB) defeated Andrew Poole and Jan Burmeister, 9-8 (7-5).
The Golden Eagles evened the match at 1-1, when Wessinghage won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0, over Taylor Boney. Nebraska then won four-straight matches at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Southern Miss got its final point at No. 5 singles with Oscar Machuca downing Renato Melo (NEB), 6-4, 6-4.
Southern Miss returns to action when the Golden Eagles host nationally ranked South Alabama, Mar. 26.
