KENNESAW, Ga. - Southern Miss pinch hitter Logan James singled up the middle in the top of the ninth inning for the only run of the game, that proved to be enough for the Golden Eagles as they won 1-0 over host Kennesaw State (7-1) to win the K-Club Invitational.
"To come in here and win the tournament championship is huge, championships are hard to come by and we fought for this one," Southern Miss coach Howard Dobson said. "We wanted this one a lot and it was nice to see out kids come through tonight."
Free runner Allison Bullard scored on James' single after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Kristin Chaney to start the inning.
"The way Logan came off the bench with a clutch hit says a lot for her," Dobson said. "She was 0-4 in the first game today, but put that behind her and came through when her team needed her the most."
Samantha Davis pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her second win in as many days.
"Samantha threw amazing today, she stayed ahead of hitters and did not walk anyone, except one person we were pitching around," Dobson said. "I cannot say enough about what a great performance she had today."
The game was dominated by the two starting pitchers. Kennesaw State's Brittney Matthews faced the minimum through five and two-thirds before Lauren Castellvi drew a two-out walk and she did not allow a hit until Kristen Chaney reached base on a bunt in the top of the sixth inning.
Davis was equally impressive allowing only four hits in the game, and setting down a span of 12 in a row at one point, while striking out 11 and walking no one.
She faced the minimum hitters from the second inning through five-and-a- third innings, allowing only one base runner in that span that was erased on a double play in the second inning.
Davis made her second start of the tournament, she picked up the win in the second game of Friday's action throwing a complete game eight hitter, only allowing one earned run.
Southern Miss placed four players on the all-tournament team, including Davis, Brandi Alonzo, Jennifer Fox and Kristin Pilgrim.
The Golden Eagles (6-3) will play their home opener Wednesday, February 20, at the Southern Miss Softball complex against Jackson State, the first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
