HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team officially opened the 2008 season with the first practice session of the year at the Pete Taylor Park Friday afternoon.
New NCAA legislation for the 2008 season mandated February 1 as the date that collegiate teams could begin preparing for their 2008 season as a team. The Golden Eagles have been working in individual group the past few of weeks.
"With the NCAA pushing us back this year the team and the coaches were are all ready to get going," Golden Eagle Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We have been in individual drills for the last three weeks and everyone was excited to hit the field as a team today."
The Golden Eagles worked out on a wet Denson Field today due to the storms that passed through the Pine Belt yesterday afternoon. Temperatures reached the mid-50's and was sunny for most of the practice.
Southern Miss will open the 2008 season in three weeks on February 22 vs. Lipscomb University at Pete Taylor Park.
