Women's Basketball Hosts William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team hosts cross-town opponent William Carey Saturday in the first of a three-game homestand. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 1988.
The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the new "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Josh West providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (3-4) is coming off a 66-44 loss at UALR. Pauline Love recorded her fourth double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Stephanie Helgeson added 11 points.
Love leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while Stephanie Helgeson is averaging 10.6 points.
In seven games, Southern Miss is averaging 63.7 points and 40.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 69.1 percent from the line. The Lady Eagles have connected on 26-of-91 from behind the arc.
The last time these two teams played, nine of the 14 players on the current roster were two years of age or younger, including five that weren't even born yet. The two teams have played six times and Southern Miss leads the series, 5-1. McNelis was an assistant coach for Southern Miss.
William Carey comes in with a 4-2 record, following an 85-72 loss against Lambuth. In that game, Kim Lewis tallied 20 points, followed by three others in double digit scoring, Kate Hubbard with 13 points, Shonte Kennedy 11 and Nora Brooks 10. Head Coach Tracy English is in his 19th season and returns six letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that finished 15-11.
The Crusaders are led by one-two punch, Fallon Hartfield and Kim Lewis, averaging 22.0 and 18.2 points, respectively. Hartfield also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 12.4 boards per game. William Carey is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 67.5 percent from the line, while averaging 73.8 points and 44.0 rebounds. Three times this season, William Carey has scored 70 or more points, including 101 against Brenau.
Following the William Carey game, Southern Miss will host Southeast Missouri State, Dec. 13, at 4 p.m.
