MOBILE, Ala. - Southern Miss tight end Shawn Nelson has accepted an invitation to play in the 60th annual Under Armour Senior Bowl game on January 24th in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium bowl officials announced Friday.
"It's very exciting and a big honor to be selected to play in the Senior Bowl," Nelson said. "I'm excited to play in front of the scouts and the great city of Mobile. A lot of my family, friends and teammates are also excited about watching me play. I can't wait to represent my university and everyone associated with Southern Miss."
Nelson and the Golden Eagles will wrap up their 2008 campaign this Sunday against Troy in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. The Gonzales, Louisiana native will finish his career in Hattiesburg in the top five in three major receiving categories. Nelson currently ranks second in career catches (155), third in career receiving yards (2,038) and fourth in career receiving touchdowns (16).
The 6-5, 239 pound tight end recorded the best game of his career in a loss to Auburn this season. Nelson finished that game with 12 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. He followed that performance with a seven catch, 110 yard outing at Arkansas State, marking the second time in his career that he had back to back games with 100 or more receiving yards.
Nelson becomes the 68th Southern Miss player to participle in the annual Senior Bowl and the first since linebacker Michael Bowley and offensive lineman Jeremy Parquet in 2004.
