Volleyball Team Holds Off East Carolina, 3-1

GREENVILLE, N. C. - The Southern Miss volleyball team held off East Carolina in volleyball action Friday night, 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 25-16), improving to 15-12 and 5-9 in league play.
Senior Stevi Cherry led the way for the Golden Eagles with a match-high 17 kills, while Angela Hlavaty added 14 kills. Lauren Sears recorded her first double digit blocking performance with 11 total blocks. Maia Ivanova registered her sixth 20-plus dig match with 23 digs. Kelsea Seymour had 40 assists and 10 digs.
Katie Prast led the Pirates (12-17, 2-12) with 10 kills. Trish Monroe recorded with 27 digs.
Southern Miss got off to a fast start in taking the first set, 25-19. The Golden Eagles out hit the Pirates, .423 to .114.
East Carolina battled back to tie the match at 1-1. Southern Miss led 17-15 when ECU used a 10-4 run to close out the set for a 25-21 win.
Both teams battled back and forth throughout the third set. Southern Miss grabbed the lead using a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. The Golden Eagles maintained until ECU used a run of its own to take a 23-22 lead. Southern Miss retook the lead and held on for a 27-25 win.
The fourth set featured five lead changes and seven ties with the last coming at 12-12, before Southern Miss out scored ECU, 13-4, for a 25-16 win.
Southern Miss now travels to Marshall for a Sunday match.
