Volleyball Team Claims 3-2 Victory Over Marshall

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team turned back C-USA foe Marshall in a five-set thriller (11-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 17-15) at Reed Green Coliseum Sunday. It was only the second win over the Herd (8-7, 1-4 C-USA) in the last six meetings.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Petrinec registered a match-high 16 kills and junior outside hitter Angela Hlavaty tallied a season-best 15 kills to pace the Golden Eagles (12-6, 2-3). Freshman Sarah Jane Bowden matched her season high with 11 kills, while fellow freshman Lauren Sears recorded 10 kills as well. Marshall got solid performances from Elizabeth Herman with 14 kills, followed by Jalicia Ross with 12 kills to with seven blocks, Megan Carlson notched 11 kills to go with 20 digs and Cameron Yoho had 10 kills.
"I was extremely pleased with the way were fought back," coach Ricci Luyties said. "We got good play from our subs and Angela (Hlavaty) and Ashley (Petrinec) really stepped up for us today."
The Herd quickly jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back, racing to a 25-11 win in set one. Marshall dominated the set, finishing with a .323 attack percentage, committing only two attack errors. The Herd also put down 6.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss clawed back into the match with a 25-18 win in the second set and never trailed in evening the match at 1-1. Marshall closed the gap to 20-18, but Southern Miss then ran off five straight points to seal the win.
The momentum shifted back to the Herd in set three, as Marshall ran out to a 7-2 lead in set three. Southern Miss attempted a combine back, but Marshall got stellar performances on the front line, putting down 10 total blocks and coming up with 18 digs against the Eagles for a 25-21 win.
Set four opened with both teams battling back and forth until Southern Miss put together an 8-1 run midway through the set to take a 17-10 lead. Marshall got within three points on two occasions, but the Eagles held on for the 25-20 win to even the match.
In the deciding set, Marshall took the early lead, before Southern mounted a comeback that got the Eagles within a point, 9-8. Marshall eventually pushed its lead to three, 13-10, when Southern Miss got three kills from Sears and Bowden to go with a Marshall error to tie the set at 14-14. The Herd pulled ahead on a kill by Herman for a 15-14 lead. With Marshall serving for the match, Bowden then put down her 10th kill, and followed with her 11th on the next possession, giving the Eagles a 16-15 advantage. The match ended on a Marshall hitting error that saw Southern Miss take the final set, 17-15.
Petrinec recorded her fifth straight double-double with 10 digs. Libero Maia Ivanova turned in her second consecutive 20-dig performance. Setter Kelsey Seymour tallied a career-high 56 assists. Hlavaty also reached double-digit status with 10.
Petrinec, who entered the weekend needing 27 kills to reach 1,000, became the 12th player reach the milestone in a career during the fifth set.
Southern Miss remains at home when the Golden Eagles host UAB, Oct. 10, and Memphis, Oct. 12.
