Volleyball Team Falls to UAB in Four Sets, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Three UAB players recorded double-digit kills in leading the Blazers past Southern Miss, 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-12, 25-11), in Conference USA volleyball action Friday.
Southern Miss drops to 12-7 and 2-4 in league play, while UAB improves to 15-3, 5-1. Angela Hlavaty led Southern Miss with nine kills, followed by Sarah Jane Bowden with eight kills. Maia Ivanova registered 18 digs to go with two aces.
UAB's Casey Dent led all players with a match-high 11 kills followed by Lilly Domingos and Savannah Pegg with 10 kills apiece. Ivana Bozic paced four Blazers with 17 digs, Aleksandra Vujovic had 13, Heather Thomas added 12 and Nevena Stepanova chipped in 11 digs to go with 44 assists.
The teams split the first two sets, heading into the intermission tied at 1-1. Following the break, UAB built a 14-4 lead in which the Golden Eagles could not recover. UAB held Southern Miss to a -.088 attack percentage, while hitting .417 in taking set three, 25-12.
UAB continued its momentum in set four, running out to a 13-4 lead on its way to 25-11 win.
The Blazers out hit the Golden Eagles, .223 to .013 and finished with 13.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss returns to action Sunday, when the Golden Eagles host Memphis at 1 p.m.
