HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team lost their final game of the 2008 season 4-1 against visiting UCF Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We had a very good game plan and followed that game plan perfectly in the first half," We did not come out with as much fire and determination in the second half as we would have liked to. UCF is one of the best teams in our Conference and should go very far in the postseason this year."
UCF struck for the games first goal in the 12 minute as Danielle Dos Santos took a perfect pass from Nikki Moore and was able to convert for the early lead from inside the six-yard box.
Southern Miss answered to tie the game in the 30th minute as freshman Jordan Gauthier connected for her first career goal off an assist by Sarah DeFatta.
The Golden Eagles went into the half tied with the nations 22nd ranked team but in the 52nd minute the Knights pulled away on a goal by Yvonne George. UCF would add goals in the 67 minute by Courtney Whidden and in the 85th minute by Andrea Rodrigues to complete the scoring.
Today's loss was the final game in the 2008 campaign under first year head coach Scott Ebke as the Golden Eagles finished 5-13-1 on the season.
"We played 45 minutes with a top 25 program today and we will go to work immediately ready to play for a Conference USA Tournament bid next season.," Ebke added.
Four Southern Miss seniors played in their final game for the Golden Eagles this afternoon; Obafemi Alao, Christina Duvall, Malinda Hill and Sarah McFadden.
"There have been a lot of ups and downs for these seniors and it was a difficult position for them with a new coach coming in their final year. They each worked hard and were dedicated to the team this season and for that I thank them. All four young ladies will be great representatives of the University of Southern Mississippi in whatever they do for the rest of their lives," Ebke said.
