UAB Outlasts Southern Miss In Five Sets, 3-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball team upset bid against UAB came up short, as the Blazers took a five-setter, 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 15-10) from the Golden Eagles in Conference USA action.
Southern Miss (13-10, 3-7) was paced by Angela Hlavaty and Ashley Petrinec, each with a double-double. Hlavaty tallied 15 kills and 16 digs, while Petrinec added 15 kills to go with 12 digs. Sarah Jane Bowden registered 14 kills with .400 attack percentage. Maia Ivanova recorded a match-high 25 digs, followed by Kelsea Seymour with 13 and Lisa Knecht with 10.
Andrea Lalic led UAB (19-3, 9-1) with a match-high 18 kills. Ivan Bozic had 12 kills and 21 digs.
The Golden Eagles opened set one, out hitting the Blazers .341 to .178 for a 25-21 win. Petrinec, Bowden and Hlavaty combined for 15 of the 20 kills.
In set two, Southern Miss popped out to the early lead, but UAB tightened its defense and committed only two attack errors in defeating Southern Miss, 25-21.
The Blazers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set three, before the Eagles put together an 11-2 run to take a 12-8 lead. UAB battled back to tie the set, 15-15. With the score tied at 19-19, UAB closed out the set on a 6-2 run for a 25-21 win.
Both teams traded the lead to begin the fourth set before Southern Miss grabbed a 12-8 lead. UAB knotted the set, 14-14, before the Golden Eagles were able to push ahead, 16-14, picking up the momentum on their way to a 25-18 win.
Southern Miss started the final set strong, but UAB regained the momentum behind big blocks at the net. With the set tied at 7-7, UAB took advantage of several attack errors by the Golden Eagles in taking the final set, 15-10.
Southern Miss continues its road swing, traveling to Memphis for a Sunday matchup.
