HOUSTON-- Senior Stevi Cherry led all players with 14 kills, while Bridget Whalen added 10 digs to go with 13 assists as Southern Miss lost to Houston 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday.
Southern Miss falls to 13-9 and 3-6 in C-USA play, while Houston improves to 13-8 overall and 5-3.
The Cougars seized control of the match early with an impressive performance in the first set. After the Golden Eagles pulled to within 5-5, UH rattled off the next eight points to build a 13-5 advantage and never led by fewer than five points the rest of the way.
Set two proved to be much closer throughout, and USM appeared to grab the momentum when a UH attack error handed the Golden Eagles a 24-23 lead. However, UH's Justine Farmer knotted the set at 24-24 on the next point and Ingrida Zauere gave the Cougars the lead with a 25-24 advantage. Kinsey Cave and Erin Rice then teamed on a block to end the set and hand the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, the two teams went back and forth, alternating 11 consecutive points midway through the set. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 17-16, but the Cougars scored four of the next five points for a 21-17 lead and added the set's final three points for the win.
Farmer posted 12 kills to lead the Cougars, while Lucy Charuk added 11 kills with only one error for an impressive .556 attack percentage.
The Golden Eagles return to action, traveling to UAB and Memphis, Oct. 24 and 26.
