Golden Eagles Ranked No. 33 in NCBWA Preseason Baseball Poll

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) ranked Southern Miss No. 33 in the 2008 preseason baseball poll released today.
The Golden Eagles were 39-23 in 2007 earning a school record fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. Southern Miss will return seven starters and 20 players overall from the 2007 team. Coach Corky Palmer will also welcome in 11 new players to make up this seasons roster.
Of the 25 opponents the Golden Eagles play in 2008, 11 are either ranked in the top 35 or received votes in the first poll of the season. The 2008 schedule features 56 games, with 27 of those against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason NCBWA poll.
The schedule includes a three game series at No.3 Rice, two games on the road vs. No. 7 Ole Miss, a three game series at No. 14 Cal State Fullerton, two games at Pete Taylor Park vs. No.24 Mississippi State and a single home game vs. No. 34 LSU.
The poll voters are made up of 30 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. After a preseason Top 35 listing, the remainder of the polls will feature a national Top 30.

The Golden Eagles will open practice on February 1 and open the 2008 season February 22 vs. Lipscomb University at Pete Taylor Park.
