Volleyball Team Concludes Tournament With Two Wins

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- - The volleyball team concluded its play at the Alabama State Invitational with two wins, finishing the weekend with a 4-0 record in the process.
Southern Miss swept host Alabama State in three games, 30-17, 30-15, 30-17, its morning match. Morgan Johnson led the way with 12 kills and four aces, while Stevi Cherry came off the bench to record 10 kills. Jessica Holt led Alabama State with 11 kills.
Southern Miss finished the match with a season-high .421 attack percentage, out hitting ASU (.062). Every player on the Lady Eagle roster saw action.
The Golden Eagles concluded their play, sweeping Mississippi Valley State in three games, 30-14, 30-13, 30-26.
Johnson paced the Lady Eagles with 14 kills, followed by Ashley Petrinec with 13 and Angela Hlavaty added 10 kills. Maia Ivanova and Amy Flarity tallied 14 and 12 digs respectively. Porsha Cummings led MVSU with seven kills, while Tenisha Taylor and Lincoln Shelby recorded 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
The Golden Eagles led start to finish in the 30-14 game one win, finishing with a .472 attack percentage.
Following game one, head coach Ricci Luyties substituted freely throughout the match. Every player received time.
Southern Miss improved to 8-7 on the season. The Lady Eagles return to action on Sept. 18, when the team travels to Hammond, La., to play Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m.
