HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Southern Miss first baseman Trey Sutton was named a third-team All-American, today, as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
This marks the first All-America honor for Sutton and gives the Golden Eagles at least one All-American for five-straight years. Southern Miss has had 16 players earn 39 All-America honors since 1990, including 10 players who earned 29 honors under Head Coach Corky Palmer since 2003.
Sutton, one of three players from Conference USA to earn NCBWA All-America honors along with Rice's pitcher/first baseman Joe Savery (first team) and designated hitter Aaron Luna (third team), was named to the All-Conference USA first team, earning his third all-conference selection in as many seasons.
Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the C-USA Tournament, the Southern Miss leadoff hitter led the Golden Eagles in hitting (.368), runs scored (69), hits (88), doubles (18), triples (3), total bases (136), slugging percentage (.569) and on-base percentage (.459). He was first in fewest strikeouts among starters and second on the team in home runs (8), RBIs (38) and third in walks (38). He also led all infielders with a .995 fielding percentage (527 PO/22A/3E) and was part of 42 double plays this season.
In Conference USA, he led the league in runs scored, No. 2 in batting average, total bases, on-base percentage and putouts, No. 3 in slugging percentage, No. 4 in hits, is tied for No. 4 in doubles, No. 5 in fielding percentage and is tied for No. 7 in triples.
Nationally, he was No. 15 in runs scored per game and was the No. 77 toughest player to strikeout.
Sutton also was outstanding in the classroom as well, displaying a 3.75 grade point average in business administration. He was named the Conference USA Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year for Baseball and was honored as a member of the prestigious ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team. He has been on the President's List once and the dean's list four times. He has been on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was selected as a C-USA Academic Medalist for two years.
Southern Miss just completed its 2007 season, finishing 39-23 overall and 14-10 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles have won at least 39 games a year for five-straight years and have made an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament in each year during that stretch as well, and made eight tournament appearances overall. That streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances is the 12th-longest in the nation.
