Ezell and Sutton Named To Conference USA All-Academic Team

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior pitcher Patrick Ezell and junior first baseman Trey Sutton have been named to the Conference USA 11-member All-Academic Team. This is the first year that the conference has named an all-academic team. The scholar athlete of the year for baseball will be released at a later time.
Ezell holds a 3.73 GPA in history and the senior has been a four-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member. He served as role model for special education and underprivileged children and has helped lead Southern Miss to three-straight NCAA Regional appearances and is close to securing the fourth after taking over the team's cloer role in 2007. Sutton is a junior business administration major with a 3.75 GPA. He was named to the President's List in the fall 2006 and has made the Dean's List four times. A two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member,
Sutton leads the Golden Eagles in hitting, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, total bases, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and putouts. Both Ezell and Sutton were Academic All-District VI first-team selections.
Besides the two from Southern Miss, Rice led the league with three selections, followed with two honorees from Houston, Memphis and UCF. Representing Rice on the team is junior shortstop Brian Friday (3.39, economics and managerial studies), junior catcher Danny Lehmann (3.39, kinesiology and managerial studies) and senior pitcher Ryne Tacker (3.55, kinesology and managerial studies)
Junior outfielder Jimmy Cesario (3.46, pre-psychology) and senior first baseman Josh Stirneman (3.85, business) represented Houston, senior pitcher Ben Grisham (3.55, health and human performance) and senior shortstop Michael Murray (3.35, biology) were honorees from Memphis and representing UCF was senior utility Matt Horwath (3.22, accounting) and sophomore infielder Kiko Vasquez (3.24, physical education).
No. 3-seed Southern Miss (37-19, 14-10 Conference USA) opens up the 2007 Conference USA Tournament against No. 6-seed UAB on Wednesday, May 23, at 3 p.m., CT, at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C.
