Baseball Wins Both Ends of Extra Inning Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Pinch hitter Keith Winstead drove in Drew Carson in the 11th inning to lead Southern Miss to a 4-3 victory in game one, and Trey Sutton scored on a wild pitch in the 13th inning to lead the Golden Eagles to a 9-8 win in game two of a doubleheader, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 2,919 in attendance.
Patrick Ezell (3-2) earned the win in game one, pitching the final 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four batters. Ben Wade (1-0) was credited with the win in game two, pitching the final three innings, giving up a walk and striking out one batter. It was the first career win for Wade.
In game one, Drew Carson reached on a walk to lead off the 11th inning, moved to second on Burger's sacrifice bunt to pitcher Ryan Millard and then scored on Winstead's single to right field.
In game two, Carson reached on a one-out walk in the 13th inning, moved to third on Eddie Burger's single up the middle and scored on a wild pitch from pitcher Ryan Goings.
In game one, Southern Miss (32-19) scored four runs on nine hits and committed one error, while Dallas Baptist (27-25) scored three runs on six hits and committed three errors in game one.
In game two, The Golden Eagles scored nine runs on 13 hits and committed two errors, while the Patriots scored eight runs on nine hits and committed two errors.
In game one, Sutton and Brian Dozier finished with two hits, and Luke Adkins, Drew Carson and Winstead each collected an RBI in game one. Dallas Baptist had six players finish with one hit each. Austin Krum and Matt Tucker each had solo homers for the Patriots.
In game two, Jody Blount finished with three hits and Dozier, Adkins and James Ewing each had two hits each. Michael Ewing collected two RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles. Evan Bigley led the Patriots with three hits and two RBIs, while Garrett Baker had one hit and two RBIs and Trevor Head finished with two hits.
In game one, Southern Miss scored a single run in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead. In the first inning, Dozier doubled to left field and scored when Michael Ewing reached on a fielding error by shortstop Austin Knight. Carson doubled to right center to drive in James Ewing in the second inning. Dozier reached on a bunt single down the third base line, moved to second on Blount's walk and scored on Adkins single through the right side.
Dallas Baptist scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning to tie the game at 3-3. In the sixth inning, Brandon Bantz reached on a bunt single down the third base line, moved to second on TJ Bloodworth's single to center field, advanced to third on Krum's ground out to first base and scored on Knight's ground out to short. Tucker hit a solo shot to right center in the seventh inning, and Krum hit a solo shot to right field in the eighth inning.
Southern Miss had bases loaded in the seventh inning with two-outs before James Ewing hit a hard line drive to center to end the inning.
Tucker reached base on a fielding error by Dozier to lead off the ninth and stole second before Nick Santos flew out to Chris Matesich in foul territory and Garrett Baker and Trevor Head struck out back-to-back to close out the inning.
The Patriots rallied again in the 11th inning. Evan Bigby hit a one-out single through the left side and Tucker walked before Santos and Baker struck out back-to-back to end the inning.
In game two, Dallas Baptist took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Baker solo home run to left field.
The Golden Eagles tied the game with a run in the third inning. Sutton walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on Dozier's ground out to second, moved to third on Blount's ground out to short and scored on a wild pitch from starter Victor Black.
Southern Miss scored a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Adkins walked to lead off the fourth inning, moved to second when James Ewing was walked and both advanced a base on Carson's bunt to first base. Winstead grounded out to short to plate Adkins.
In the fifth inning, Sutton singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on Blount's single through the right side. Blount stole second and scored on Adkins' two-out single up the middle.
Dallas Baptist struck for four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Bloodworth singled up the middle, moved to second on Krum's walk and scored on Knight's single to right field. Knight advanced to second on Michael Ewing's fielding error on his RBI single, and he and Krum scored on Bigley's single to center. Tucker doubled to left center to drive in Bigley for the fourth run of the inning.
Southern Miss scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-5 lead. Sutton singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch from pitcher Tyson Bagley. Dozier was hit by a pitch and Blount singled to center to load the bases. Michael Ewing singled up the middle to drive in Sutton and Dozier. Blount moved to third on the play and scored on a wild pitch from John Lester.
The Patriots answered with two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Knight walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on Bigley's single through the left side. Tucker reached on a fielder's choice when Golden Eagle pitcher JR Ballinger made an errant throw, trying to retire Knight at third base. Knight scored on the play and Bigley advanced to third base. Baker flew out to left field to plate Bigley to tie the game.
Dallas Baptist scored a run in the ninth inning to take the 8-7 lead. Head doubled to left field, moved to third on Brandon Bantz's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and scored when Bloodworth's flew out to center field.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the ninth inning to tie the game at 8-8. Adkins hit a one-out single to center field, advanced to second on James Ewing's single through the left side and scored on Carson's single to left center.
Southern Miss and Dallas Baptist play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 1 p.m. The five seniors, Ryan Belanger (P), Jody Blount (OF), Eddie Burger (C), Bailey Hartel (2B) and Patrick Ezell (P) will be honored in a ceremony at 12:45 p.m., as part of their last game at "The Pete".
